Best View on Alabama Highway 117
(in the humble opinion of this webmaster)

Driving out of Mentone to the West toward Valley Head and I-59, there are several pull-outs where you can stop and admire the view. Most, however, have the view blocked by foliage through most of the year. The best view I've found yet is the one shown above.

2011 UPDATE: Late in 2011, someone cleaned out the pull-out on the West side of the road at the end of the rock wall, so if you're coming down the mountain, you might be able to pull off on the RIGHT instead of Left as described below.

2012 UPDATE - Wow! Someone really cleared out the pull-out on the "view-side" of the highway, then the Mentone Area Arts Council sponsored the installation of that large carved stone marker. There's one at each of the three highways into town. Now several cars can park in that pull-out area and no need to do all that I describe in the paragraphs below.

How it was in 2010
If you're coming UP the mountain from the West, you'll pass the Mentone city limits sign, then a street turning off to the right, then the next pull-out to your RIGHT is the one shown here on the right. Photo was taken from the pull-out, facing up the mountain. When you see the start of the rock wall, it's time to pull off.

If you're coming DOWN the mountain from Mentone, it's a bit trickier. As soon as the rock wall ends, you'll see the pull-out on your LEFT. If you're unable to cross safely, you can continue a little farther and you'll find a road to the left that branches off and allows you to make a U-turn (again being careful of traffic behind you and in front of you).

March 2016 - What you see here is the great railing that was installed here through the combined efforts of many in Mentone. Click the photo to read The Groundhog article about it.
